God’s Call To Worship
Another very accurate word-for-word translation of the Bible, the ESV, is good for study and devotional reading. The translators intent was to follow an “essentially literal” translation philosophy while taking into account differences of grammar, and syntax between current literary English and the original languages. This 8-session group Bible study is based on The Folly of Prayer: Practicing the Presence and Absence of God by Matthew Woodley. It’s best used as an accompaniment to the book.
Many people believe that there is a Bible verse somewhere that says you are made to worship. It was Martin Luther who once said that “Man was made to worship God.”
I happen to agree with him, so I compiled a list of Bible verses about worship to help you learn what the definition of worship is from the Bible and to encourage you to worship more. God is seeking true worshipers.
I have included a brief explanation of the worship scriptures so you can understand the context of why the particular scripture was written. I hope you enjoy my list of worship scripture passages.

The Importance Of Worship
- This page is devoted to sharing information about the Lutheran Divine Service/Liturgy/Worship. A Detailed Explanation of the Lutheran Divine Service Notes on the Lutheran Liturgy of Sickness, Death, and Dying.
- Lutheran worship is a continual conversation between God and the believer, in which we focus on Jesus, who is present with and for us through His Word and Sacrament. Through the hymns, liturgy, and prayers in the Divine Service, we receive the precious gifts our Lord desires to give us: the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.
Genesis 24:26
Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the LORD.
This is an example where Abraham’s servant worshiped God for provision. Worship is a form of prayer, and in giving worship, he was thanking God.
Revelation 4:9-11
Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:11 “ You are worthy, O Lord,To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things,And by Your will they exist and were created.”
Moreover, here we see that worship continues in heaven. It does not stop. We will be worshiping in heaven, so we better start learning to do it daily and enjoy it.
Reasons To Worship
Exodus 4:31
So the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel and that He had looked on their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.
Here we see the people of God worshiping God because He was delivering them out of the bondage of slavery. Today we have many opportunities to worship God for what He has set us free from!
1 Chronicles 16:29
Give to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come before Him. Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!
When we worship God, we are giving God the glory for what He has done. We are coming before Him. When you worship God, you are entering into His presence. You are coming to where He lives and giving to Him the gift you have to offer.
Matthew 8:2
And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Here we see two things. One is that there is a correlation at least between worship and healing. Many times I have seen people healed both emotionally and physically during worship. Second is that if Jesus will accept the worship of an outcast like a leper, then He receives worship from anyone.

Bible Verses For Worship Leaders – Call To Worship Quotes
Psalm 5:7
But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.
Here King David is committing to be a regular worshiper of God in His house because of the mercy God has shown him. He recognizes the importance of corporate worship, where you gather with other believers to worship God. We need to worship God daily in our private lives, but we also need to worship God publicly with other believers. Both are part of the Christian experience.
Here are a few more calls to worship.
Psalm 66:1-4
1 Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!2 Sing about the glory of his name!Tell the world how glorious he is.3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.4 Everything on earth will worship you;they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs.”
Psalm 95:1-3
1 Come, let us sing to the Lord!Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.2 Let us come to him with thanksgiving.Let us sing psalms of praise to him.3 For the Lord is a great God,a great King above all gods.
Biblical Examples Of Worship
Joshua 5:14
So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
Here we have an example of a visit to earth by Jesus before His earthly ministry. Joshua’s response was to worship Jesus flat on his face in an impressive case of surrender and reverence. Part of the act of worship is surrender and reverence, and our body language is just as important as the words of our lips because it shows the sincerity of the heart.
2 Chronicles 20:18
And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the LORD, worshiping the LORD.
Here is another example in one of many worship scriptures of people who proved not only with their lips but with their body language the sincerity and transparency of their worship. They meant it! You can find this in many worship scriptures.
Psalm 95:6
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
Here again, we see that both bowing and kneeling are body language signals that are encouraged in our worship of God.
A Bible Verse About True Worship
John 4:23
Free Lutheran Bible Study Lessons
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Here is one of the more famous worship scriptures we see that it is important to worship God with not just your mind, or your actions but in your heart, in your spirit. It is not enough to have the truth; you must have spirit. Moreover, vice a versa, it is not enough to have spirit, the truth must be there as well.
Bible Verses About Worshiping Together
Ephesians 5:18-20
18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:42
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
Although private worship is an essential Christian discipline, gathering together to worship as a community is also vitally important. When we do, Jesus is in the midst of us. (Matthew 18:20)
